Canada: A record number of people denied bail

The number of people held in remand across the country – people charged with a crime but not granted bail – reached a record in 2022-23 and again in 2023-24. The figure exceeds those sentenced for crimes in both provincial and federal prisons.

The data show the average counts of sentenced offenders in federal prisons, as well as the average counts of sentenced adult offenders in provincial and territorial correctional programs. The 2023-24 federal number is not yet available.
