Canada's poverty rate and the end of COVID-19 relief programs

The percentage of persons living below the poverty line in Canada dropped in 2020 as the country rolled out massive COVID-19 income support programs. The poverty rate then crept up in 2021, as Ottawa tapered the pandemic income transfers. In May, Statistics Canada said trends in consumer prices and incomes suggested the poverty rate would approach prepandemic levels in 2022.
