What Canada's countertariffs mean for consumer purchases
A bar chart showing the 2025 value, in millions of Canadian dollars, of consumer-facing product categories that Canada imports from the United States and that are now subject to Canada's counter-tariffs, effective Sept. 8, 2026. Hair care products lead at $348-million (50 per-cent tariff), followed by metal furniture at $258-million and household washing machines at $171-million. Clothing (combining all knit and woven apparel, all taxed at the same 50 per-cent rate) totals $99-million. Perfumes, computer monitors, household refrigerators, golf clubs and equipment, video game consoles and smartphones round out the list, each facing either a 25 or 50 per-cent tariff.
