Would you be able to buy a house if you lived rent-free in your 20s?

Here's how much young Canadians would be able to save by living at home rent free for eight years if they set aside the equivalent of the average market rent for a single bedroom in a shared home.

Methodology: Room rents reflect an average of values provided to the Globe by rental listings sites Roomies.ca and Rentals.ca. The price of a typical home reflects CREA's benchmark home price. We assumed a three per cent annual rate of inflation for both rent and home prices. The downpayment needed to buy a home represents a 10-per-cent down payment except in cities where the value of a typical home is $1 million or more, which requires a down payment of at least 20 per cent.
